Notes by Doug Cole

I live in Salmon Arm, half way between Vancouver and Calgary, in British Columbia, Canada. You can look at the place at http://www.salmonarm.ca.

You would be welcome to visit except in March or April, and give us a couple of month's notice, we have some spare bedrooms, and right now, an extra motor car.

Memories by Doug Cole

I was delighted to see all your names and photographs again. Your names bring back a lot of happy memories, usually connected with soccer, cycling, sailing, table tennis, debating with girls, or tennis. I married the girl I got engaged to the day I left school and we are still married. She left yesterday for Calgary as we are due for a second grandchild from the elder of our two daughters, and she will be looking after our grandaughter while my other nurse daughter flies in from Vancouver to help with the birth on Wednesday Jan 31 2007.

I am self employed as an accountant, and as every individual in Canada has to file a tax return for calendar 2006 by April 30 2007 I am approaching my busy season. Actually we haven't recovered from that wonderful June visit to England, taking a month off (just like we did 20 years before) makes it hard to really get down to work.

But I digress. My reason for writing was that although Pete Norman was fairly solitary I did go over to his house once to talk about an Actuarial Career with him and his parents. I joined the Yorkshire Insurance Co and he joined another insurance company as an actuarial student, think it had "Northern" or "North" in its name. the Institute of Actuaries in Holborn may be able to help. That would be 1966. Old Hicks always was a real digger, us guys who did the minimum necessary, we never could figure out what motivated him, but he was a nice chap. Actuaries mainly work for insurance companies, deal with probabilities, mortality tables and also get 2 half days off to study. When they qualify they lose the two half days but make fabulous money. it was too tough for me despite that motivation.

David Clarke was friends with Chegwidden and the late Gordon Battison. Gordon had a twin sister (Cheg may be able to remember the name) who may have kept in touch with him.

John Vincent ("Vince") had all his (ingrowing) toenails amputated, probably about 1960, I know he couldn't play soccer with us in the Gym for a long time. It doesn't sound like much of a lead, but I have a lot of confidence in Hicks. I've always cut my toenails straight across since I saw his "amended" feet.

I'd love to hear from any of you, but I can't promise to write back until May, unless you write in the next few days, before my wife gets back. I have to house sit our new geothermal house heating system (and shovel snow) while the temperature remains below freezing. Once she is back there will be so much work, I am slowly building a lead over her, but we work together and she is a bit of a Hicks. That is definitely NOT a proposal Colin.

Bye for now

Doug (Pete) Cole.

My parents had a fight over my name when I was born. Dad won legally, but Mum got the second name and most of you know me as Pete or Peter or Cole. I switched back to Doug when Mum died, so even my brother has managed to switch to calling me Doug now.
