Notes by John Lambert
I attended Rutlsh from 1957 (age 11) until 1961, when my fathers work took the family to Sussex. I subsequently took my "O" and "A" levels at a school in Haywards Heath.
After three somewhat unproductive years at College and, later, in a quality control laboratory run by the Nestle Co, I found my career path within HM Customs and Excise where I worked for over 33 years. Initally I was a tax inspector, checking companies' Purchase Tax and, later, VAT returns. However, with the advent of computerised tax collection systems in the 1980s, I moved into the IT project management field as a taxation policy adviser. This role frequently took me to Brussels to assist in the harmonisation of European tax collection systems.
I took early retirement from HM C&E at the end of 2000 since when I have split my time between various part-time occupations and personal leisure pursuits. My hobbies include classic cars (I show an old Lotus at many classic car events) and the ringing of church bells (taken up quite recently).
Along the way I got married and have two sons now making their own way reasonably successfully.
